| Profile: Wales, located at the northern edge of Genesee Township, was settled by John Hughes, a Welsh settler. Because farmland was hard to acquire in his over-populated native land, he was impressed with the Kettle Moraine hills and valleys and he sent glowing reports back to his settlement. One fact that makes Wales unique is its lack of taverns. When William Elias deeded some of this land to the village, he included the restriction that if ever a tavern were opened in the village, the land would revert back to his family. So far his deed has been honored. Today, the old village has been nearly encircled by subdivisions of newer homes. |
