The Only Black Earth in the World. Located approximately 20 miles west of Madison Black Earth is a rural farming community blessed with natural resources, including fertile soils and the popular Black Earth Creek.

You will enjoy a friendly, small-town atmosphere with easy access to business and recreational opportunities. The Festge County Park offers a spectacular view at 100 feet above the Black Earth Creek Valley and showcases the entire valley in all of its glory. Black Earth also has multiple museums to cater to people of different ages and interests. The Black Earth Children’s Museum showcases a wide array of exhibits from the Toddler Farm to the Wetland Wonders and all the way down to the Driftless Den. The Halfway Prairie School Museum is a great exhibit that showcases the oldest rural elementary school in Dane County. This museum gives visitors the opportunity to see what it was like back in the day up until the school closed in 1961.

The village is home to a variety of businesses, a supper club, the largest independently owned shoe store in the Midwest, a vibrant local newspaper, and the Black Earth Creek, a class one trout stream. Local community activities include Concerts in the Park, Field Days, and so much more.

Black Earth is very proud of its past and is looking forward to the future. A great place to live, work and play!
