About Sparta, WI

The City of Sparta is located in the western part of Monroe County. It is the county seat and has a population of 9,522 residents.

Sparta, WI is known as America’s Bicycling Capital as it is at the beginning of the Sparta – Elroy Bike Trail and plays host to hundreds of riders every year. The beautiful countryside around this county-seat city is also dotted with many Amish farms where people can stop to buy everything from fresh eggs to hand-crafted quilts.

Sitting on Interstate 90 only 20 minutes from La Crosse and the Mississippi River, Sparta is a natural location for some healthy industries. The world-famous McPherson Guitars and Mathews Bows are both manufactured and distributed from here. Along with them are US Silica Sand Mining and Multi-Stack which builds and sells industrial-size heating and air conditioning units around the world. Many other businesses call Sparta home as well.

Sparta has proudly served our US Military and their civilian support staff as a host city to Fort McCoy for over 100 years. Soldiers and their families live and play as welcome members of our community. Fort McCoy offers tours to groups of 15 or more Monday through Friday, and these tours usually last up to one hour.
