About Woodruff, WI

The Town of Woodruff is located in Wisconsin’s Northwoods and sports a population of almost 2,000 residents. The town is near the Northern Highland State Forest and various lakes are scattered around the area by the town.

One of the biggest attractions in town is the World’s Largest Penny. The penny was constructed after Dr. Kate Newcomb collected 1.7 million pennies to help fund the construction of a hospital in Woodruff. The penny is now on display in downtown Woodruff. It weighs over 17,000 pounds and stands at about 5’3″ tall. In 1988, the Dr. Kate Newcomb museum opened at the site of her old office and is now a display of all the work that she did for the Woodruff community. This museum is a must-see for anyone interested in local history.

The Northern Highland State Forest is a short drive to the Southeast and provides some very memorable views. The forest contains over 232,000 acres of Northern Wisconsin woodlands and is a sight to see. Within the forest, you’ll find many hiking trails ranging in distance from half a mile up to 12 miles. Woodruff is also home to the Art Oehmcke State Fish Hatchery. This fish hatchery stocks many of the lakes across Wisconsin with Muskies, Northern Pike, and Walleye.
