About Park Falls, WI

Park Falls is located on the Flambeau River in the northern portion of Price County. The city had a population of 2,462 as of the 2010 census.

Before European settlers came to this area it was the land of the Ojibwe. Government surveyors mapped the country in 1865 when hunters, trappers, and traders walked the woods. In 1876, the first homesteads were built along the North Fork of the Flambeau River at what became known as Muskellunge Falls.

Cornell University owned most of the land around the falls and in 1885 the first band-saw mill in northern Wisconsin was built which cut 100 million feet of pine during its lifetime. Because the pines near the falls gave the spot the look of a park, Muskellunge Falls was renamed Park Falls. Manufacturing pulp here began in 1890.

Today the village continues to prosper in the forest products industry. Park Falls has the most extensively managed ruffed grouse habitat in the world consisting of many miles of mowed and covered roads and numerous wildlife openings also benefiting deer, bears, rabbits, and songbirds. Presently over 5,000 acres in this area are being intensively managed as habitat by the U.S. Forest Service, Price County Forestry Commission, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, University of Wisconsin Extension, National Ruffed Grouse Society, and the local Flambeau River Chapter.
