Richland Center is the county seat of Richland County and, true to its name, lies near the center of the county and about halfway between Madison and La Crosse. As of 2010, Richland Center had a population of 4,998.

In 1876, a narrow gauge railroad branch opened to connect Richland Center with the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad at Lone Rock, Wisconsin. The golden age of railroading is long gone and the rails have been removed, but hikers and cyclists still use the 14-mile route now known as the Pine River Trail.

Notable citizens include architect Frank Lloyd Wright who was born in Richland Center. The A.D. German Warehouse designed by Wright still attracts his fans to the city to view the massive red brick building and its ornate concrete frieze. Restoration plans are underway to preserve this bit of history.

Each June, Richland Center hosts the Wisconsin High School Rodeo Finals which coincides with the June Dairy Days parade. Timely shows are presented by an active community theater. For fishing enthusiasts, 267 miles of trout streams etch the face of the land and the Wisconsin River forms the southern boundary of the county. The rolling hills provide ideal habitat for wildlife which makes this area a favorite of hunters, bird watchers, photographers, and nature lovers.
