Ashland, Lake Superior’s Hometown! Your destination for year-round recreation, Ashland offers exceptional opportunities to discover the charm of Wisconsin’s Northwoods with a visit to Ashland and the Chequamegon Bay area.
In winter, ice and snow transform the vast wooded terrain into a pristine landscape of quiet beauty. Famous for the region’s spectacular ice caves, part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Ashland is the doorway to experience the haunting beauty of these dramatic ice formations. Ashland County has 200 miles of well-kept trails for the snowmobile enthusiast. Many of the area hotels and motels offer easy access to the trail system. In some cases the major trails are accessible from their doorstep. In addition to snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also popular cold-weather pastimes in the Ashland area and offer a great way to take in the area’s natural beauty at a slower pace.
In the summer months, Ashland offers plenty to do. Want a smooth in-line skating marathon experience? Welcome to the Apostle Islands Inline Marathon! The race is held on Madeline Island. The race is a friendly and fun experience with most of our course sporting pavement that was new in 2009. You will skate through beautiful forest and along breathtaking Lake Superior panoramas.
You may also want to participate in the Annual Chequamegon Bay Birding & Nature Festival — a weekend of birding and nature activities on Wisconsin’s south shore of Lake Superior at the peak of spring migration. With over 110 activities to choose from, birders and nature lovers of all skills and ages will find a wealth of choices at this festival. And, of course there is the spectacular fishing on Lake Superior and various water venues throughout the area. The fishing is outstanding and is there all year long.
Ashland’s eight-block Main Street business district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as it serves as the backdrop for the more than a dozen large, vibrant murals created by local artists Kelly Meredith and Sue Martinsen which depict the city’s colorful history. The mural walk is definitely a must see for anyone who enjoys local attractions.
