Black River Falls is the county seat of Jackson County. It is the largest city in Jackson County at a population of 3,500 and is located on the Black River.
As was typical of the early settling of the region in the mid 1850s, lumbering was the main industry. When lumbering slowed down many settlers stayed on to farm. Cranberries and strawberries were significant crops and some iron ore mining helped the area grow.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy year-round activities such as snowmobiling and ATVing on miles of trails. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are popular here as is fishing for walleye, crappie, and pike on the Black River and Lake Arbutus. There is even year-round scuba diving in Wazee Lake, known for being Wisconsin’s deepest lake.
