Manitowoc was named by the Chippewa and Ojibwa Native Americans . the name Manitowoc means “dwelling of the great spirit”. It was chartered as a village on March 6, 1851 and on March 12, 1870 was incorporated as a city.
The first settlers were of German, Norwegian, British, Irish, and Canadian heritage. Most were attracted to the area for the fishing which was done commercially. To this day the area is known for its maritime activities with marinas, charter fishing, water sports and shipbuilding.
During World War II Manitowoc built many naval vessels including submarines. The USS Cobia World War II submarine is moored in Manitowoc and is open to the public for tours. It is also home to the SS Badger, which sails across Lake Michigan to Ludington, Michigan.
