The city of Oconto was incorporated in 1869 and is the county seat for Oconto County. As of 2010, Oconto had a population of 4,513 residents.
It is located on the Bay of Green Bay which has the reputation of being one of the best walleye fisheries in the nation. In addition to “The Bay” there are over 170 lakes and 50 rivers and streams to provide all types of water activities to the enthusiast. If dry land is more your speed over there are trails for ATVs, snowmobiles , mountain bikes , cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. There are also a handful of golf courses near the Oconto area that are all within 20 minutes of the city.
Copper Culture State Park is a burial ground for the Copper Culture Native Americans. This burial ground is the oldest in Wisconsin and is one of the oldest across the nation. The park offers a 15 acre area of short prairie grass where you can hike or fish in the Oconto River. Admission is reasonably priced and offers a great chance to learn about the history of the region.
