The City of Elkhorn is the county seat for Walworth County and is located in the direct center of the county. Elkhorn has a population of 10,084 residents, as of the 2010 census.
Elkhorn originally got it’s name in the early 1800s, when Colonel Samuel Phoenix settled in the area and spotted a rack of elk antlers in one of the nearby trees. This lead him to name the area “Elk Horn”. In the years leading up to World War II, Elkhorn became known as the “Christmas Card Town”. This was because the townspeople would decorate the city center around Christmas and local painter Jan Castle Reed would paint the scene as a watercolor painting. These paintings then get turned into beautiful Christmas cards.
Today, Elkhorn has become a populated town with tons to do. There are more parks than you can count on two hands, and each one offers something that makes it unique. Amenities on offer include bike trails, playground equipment, shelter areas for events, baseball fields, basketball courts, and grills to name a few. During the summer months, the Sunset Park Pool is a great place to cool off. The pool has basketball hoops, slides, geysers, handicap accessibility, umbrellas, and more! Soccer enthusiasts can head over to the Rotary Soccer Complex and play a game on either of the two well-maintained fields. The area is also where the Elkhorn Youth Soccer Club plays their matches.
The city also has many annual events that bring people together and celebrate Elkhorn as a whole. Elkhorn is home to the Walworth County Fair, the second largest fair behind the Wisconsin State Fair. The annual Christmas Card Town Parade celebrates the spirit of the holiday season with a parade through the center of town. After the parade, the city holds their annual tree lighting ceremony with Santa himself, and the kids will have a chance after that to tell him what they want for Christmas. From May-October, check out Saturdays on the Square. This unique event invites local vendors to set up shop downtown every Saturday and sell their handmade goods to the public. Every 3rd Saturday in October, Elkhorn holds their annual Oktoberfest. This event has it all from vendors to great local food and even a car show! Any of these events are worth the trip if you’re in the area.
