Nekoosa is located in the southeastern portion of Wood County in the heart of Central Wisconsin. As of 2010, Nekoosa had a population of 2,580 residents.

To the south of Nekoosa is Petenwell Lake. At a size of 23,173 acres and getting as deep as 44 feet, it is one of the biggest lakes in Wisconsin. In fact, the lake is so large that it stretches into three counties including Wood, Juneau, and Adams. On the lake you can fish for Panfish, Musky, Catfish, and everything in between. The sheer size and shape of the lake makes it great for water sports like jet skiing and tubing during the winter months and perfect for snowmobiling in the winter. The 15 public boat landings around the lake make it easy to access the water at any point.
